Mental Health In Schools
Created by Jerremy Aguilar
This week I will be talking about mental health in schools, more specifically schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that affects the person's thoughts and may make them act unusual. Since 80% of students with mental illnesses won't receive any treatment at all (Nadworny, 2016) it is up to us educators to make sure we are able to help our students to the best of our ability. Everyone in the school has a role to play when it comes to helping students with mental illnesses (Anderson, 2016). This includes all teachers, office staff, administrative staff, and even cafeteria staff. There is a wide range of professionals within a school and each one has a role to play. Sometimes school counselors have too many students to focus on every student that is having an issue ( Nadworny, 2016). This requires general education teachers to take that first step and try to help the student. If we can help students get the right help they need in a timely manner the student may be better off down the road instead of having them wait to go and see the counselor. We need to help every student that we can so everyone can have an equal opportunity to learn. We need to work together to help our students. This includes us taking time out of our day to learn about different mental illnesses and the support systems that someone with each illness may need. We should also be looking for symptoms so we can help get the students the help they need.
