Mental Health In Schools

Image
Created by Jerremy Aguilar     This week I will be talking about mental health in schools, more specifically schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that affects the person's thoughts and may make them act unusual. Since 80% of students with mental illnesses won't receive any treatment at all (Nadworny, 2016) it is up to us educators to make sure we are able to help our students to the best of our ability. Everyone in the school has a role to play when it comes to helping students with mental illnesses (Anderson, 2016). This includes all teachers, office staff, administrative staff, and even cafeteria staff. There is a wide range of professionals within a school and each one has a role to play. Sometimes school counselors have too many students to focus on every student that is having an issue ( Nadworny, 2016). This requires general education teachers to take that first step and try to help the student. If we can help students get the right help they need in a...

Cyber Bullying

Cyber Bullying, by Jerremy Aguilar     This week I will be discussing cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is bullying someone by text, social media posts, and sharing pictures on the internet. As I talked about a week or two ago cyberbullying is a part of school violence. After watching the documentary "Dark Cloud" I was surprised to learn that peers are more likely to step in and say something to a bully rather than the teachers and other adults that were watching them (Dupej, 2020). This was really surprising especially since this study took place on a playground. The fact that the victim's peers were the ones telling the bully to stop caused the bullying to seize the rest of the time they were out on the playground. Knowing that the victim's peers were able to step up and put an end to the bully's power trip was great to see that the kids did not just stand back and watch. They decided to step in to help someone that was in trouble. Seeing that these kids were able...

Violence in Schools

Image
Ever since the events that took place on April 20th 1999 in Columbine High School there has been a rise in school violence and the students' worry that it may happen to them. To understand what school violence is you have to understand that it is not limited to just school shootings. School violence also consists of  "bullying and cyberbullying, fighting, weapon use, gang violence, sexual violence" (Preventing school violence, 2019). With that said school violence does not only have to happen in the school. "School violence occurs: on school property, on the way to or from school, during a school-sponsored event, on the way to or from a school-sponsored event" (Preventing school violence, 2019).           To understand how this country was changed you have to look back at Columbine High School on April 20th, 1999. On this day one of the deadliest school attacks have transpired. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were the shooters....

Understanding Gender Diversity

Picture by Alfredo Estrella/AFP/Getty Images used on CNN's website retrieved from https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/30/us/lgbtq-faq-misconceptions-2022-cec/index.html on 02/05/2023 Today I am looking at gender diversity and how it affects everyone on a day to day basis. In 1998 in the small town of Laramie, Wyoming a gay student that attended the University of Wyoming by the name Matthew Shepard was murdered. The movie The Laramie Project followed a theater crew asking about the case and the personal connection and thoughts the citizens of Laramie had on the case (Kaufman, 2002). A lot of the locals agreed that it was wrong and that no matter what your sexuality is no one should ever have to be beaten into a coma and later die (Kaufman, 2002). Back then there was an uproar in states across the country where people wanted everyone to be treated equally no matter your sexual or gender identity and orientation. Today, people have the right to marry whoever they choose no matter their...
