Review of Critical Issues

In this vlog I discuss the importance of educating our teachers on different substances with the focus being on vaping. Vaping has impacted our schools and a lot of educators are not presented with all of the facts on vaping. As a future educator and someone that vapes I want to make sure that all of my students are aware of the different options out there when it comes to vaping. As someone that wants to work in NYC I know that my students will all be able to buy a vape without an ID. There are a lot of places that only care about the money and will sell anything to minors. Vaping is a serious topic for me since I know a lot more than most of the teachers that are currently teaching their students about the dangers of vaping. Most teachers only talk about disposables and Juuls but miss the products that the vaping community uses. I want to inform everyone about some of the types of devices that are out there so we can all be educated and teach our students more effi...

Home/ School Connection

https://integratedstaffingcorp.com/improving-communication-skills/ Part 1      This weeks blog is slightly different. In this part I will be discussing what my thought are on some articles and a video. In the video   9 Ways to Communicate with Parents for Teachers // INCREASE parent communication! You receive a lot of information on how to communicate with parents as an educator. I feel like there was too much time spent on using technology when some parents do not enjoy using technology. However I did like some of the ideas. As a future high school math teacher I would have never thought to use Google sites as a way to help students look at the materials. The one downside to using all of this technology is that there is a lot that can go wrong. There are a lot of people who are not technologically literate. This can cause a lot of students to suffer due to their parents not being able to work the technology.      In order to keep this from happ...

Technology's Influence on Classrooms

Image
https://elearningindustry.com/how-important-is-technology-in-todays-education-industry      This week I am discussing how technology impacts the classroom. For the most part I will be talking about my ideal classroom. Since I am going to be an adolescent math teacher I want to hold my students to a higher standard. Personally I do not want my students to use technology. I believe that technology is essential to today's world however, in a math class I believe that it is essential for students to know how to do mental math as well as be able to do computations by hand instead of relying on using technology. We see how people who were able to do all of these higher levels of math by hand in order to help the US government achieve their goals. If we ever lose technology forever a lot of people will not be able to do these computations by hand because they relied too much on technology. Don't get me wrong technology is a great tool to have however  we can not rely...

Addiction

https://insight.livestories.com/s/v2/what-is-vaping/4c9af340-3b63-4b89-9927-b722ccd8684b      This weeks post is a little different. I looked at the NDAFW's activities to help educate students on substance abuse. Unfortunately there was no clear lesson plan and was more of an outline on how to properly educate students in grades 6 through 12 on different substances and the effects it can have on your body. For the most part the NDAFW wants the students to be able to complete these goals by the end of the lesson "Analyzing and interpreting information, data, and/or evidence, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical thinking, Giving a presentation, Reading comprehension, Writing" (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2020). In our lessons on substance abuse it's our goal to educate our students as to why they should not part take in certain substances and allow them to be able to us what they learn by using the skills listed above.     Since this was more of an ove...

Social Emotional/ Mindfulness

Image
Southwest Guilford High School, Social Emotional learning. https://www.gcsnc.com/domain/18293#calendar131465/20230326/month As someone who practices mindfulness techniques everyday I believe that it is extremely important to introduce these ideas to our students. As a  HIndu I practice mindfulness techniques as part of my religion every day. It helps me calm down and keeps my mind feeling calmed and cleansed. Everyone believes that practicing mindfulness techniques in your everyday life is only a religious thing when in reality it's meant for everyone. Mindfulness techniques can help us and our students make sure that we are able to handle our emotions as well as free our mind from negativity.      It is important that with increased mental health issues that we implement more mindfulness practices into our classrooms. "Nearly 1 in 3 adolescents will meet criteria for an anxiety disorder by the age of 18" (Mindful Schools, 2021). Mindful practices such as...

Poverty/ Homelessness

Image
Created by Jerremy Aguilar     One of the biggest issues facing our education system today is the impact of homelessness and poverty on our students. After watching The Homestretch  I've realized that educators will do everything in their power to help students. This was a common theme throughout the movie when a teacher tok in one of her students because he did not have a permanent living situation and ICE had deported his father (De Mare, 2014). This was a high school senior by the name Roque. He had fallen behind in school since he had to miss 3 months of school to deal with his situation at home.  The documentary also followed 2 other students and at the end explained where they were at in life. Roque had help from his teacher to get him into college. Lending a helping had even if it is a small gesture can go a long way.     An example of lending a helping hand are the recent policies that New York State has recently put in place.  Duri...

Mental Health In Schools

Image
Created by Jerremy Aguilar     This week I will be talking about mental health in schools, more specifically schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that affects the person's thoughts and may make them act unusual. Since 80% of students with mental illnesses won't receive any treatment at all (Nadworny, 2016) it is up to us educators to make sure we are able to help our students to the best of our ability. Everyone in the school has a role to play when it comes to helping students with mental illnesses (Anderson, 2016). This includes all teachers, office staff, administrative staff, and even cafeteria staff. There is a wide range of professionals within a school and each one has a role to play. Sometimes school counselors have too many students to focus on every student that is having an issue ( Nadworny, 2016). This requires general education teachers to take that first step and try to help the student. If we can help students get the right help they need in a...
